Yes, I have another Unision Schmoozefest story, this time from 2019. I wanted to get a picture with the amazing Tom Cochrane, and both Darren Throop from eOne and Gary Slaight (on the right) from Slaight Music bounced in on the pic. I didn’t know much about Gary at the time, but what I now know is that because of the generosity of The Slaight Family Foundation, Unison has been able to provide assistance during these unprecedented times.
Unison Benevolent Fund is a non-profit, registered charity that provides counselling and emergency relief services to the Canadian music community. In addition to financial support to Canadian music-makers, Unison also provide confidential support services and access to qualified professionals who can provide support to individuals and their immediate family members dealing with health, legal and work-related issues. Unison helps when unfortunate circumstances make working difficult or impossible, like Covid-19.
And it’s not just the artists being supported. It’s also the sound techs, roadies, managers, promoters, agents, publishers, songwriters, labels and venue staff. In normal times, Unison is there to help professional music makers in times of hardship, illness or economic difficulties.
But these are NOT normal times. Now more than ever, Unison is being called upon to provide relief assistance to members. Thanks to the generous donation of $250,000 from the Slaight Family Foundation, which has been matched by the Unison office, The Unison COVID-19 Relief Program has been established. Funding will be allocated towards housing costs, medical expenses, and groceries.” says Executive Director, Amanda Power.
This will help in the short-term, but no one really knows when the music world will be back to normal times, hopefully soon if we all do our part. This initial $500,000 for the Unison COVID-19 Relief Program will help the music community for now, however in order to meet the growing demand more support is needed to ensure a future for our Canadian music community.
Two snaps for Gary Slaight!
